Shanghai, 8 January 2025. International automotive supplier FORVIA HELLA has developed a highly customized LED Matrix Headlamp for the new smart#5 by Smart Automobile Co., Ltd., a global Joint Venture of Geely Holding and Mercedes-Benz. These advanced headlamps not only provide intelligent lighting functions but also enhance the vehicle's distinctive visual appeal and offer significant advantages for installation. The headlamps were developed and produced by FORVIA HELLA's local teams in China and entered series production in September this year.
"The dynamic LED matrix headlamp we developed for the smart#5 further showcase our innovation and robust support in intelligent lighting”, says Didier Keskas, head of business group lighting in the Asia Pacific region. “At FORVIA HELLA, we are committed to delivering added value through cutting-edge lighting technology while deeply understanding and meeting the unique needs of our customers."
In terms of functionality, the headlamp for the new smart#5, feature adaptive driving beam (ADB), dynamic bending light (DBL), and LED daytime running lights. These advanced features allow the headlamp to intelligently adjust light intensity, angle, and range based on real-time road conditions and vehicle dynamics, providing precise lighting support during turns and significantly improving nighttime driving safety and comfort. The matrix lighting modules further enable multi-mode lighting scenarios and dynamic effects, incorporating signaling functions for various situations, such as welcoming and farewell animations.
From a design perspective, the new smart#5 headlamp adopts an innovative "time capsule" LED matrix design that is both avant-garde and creative. The headlamps seamlessly merge with the streamlined daytime running lights to form a continuous light strip, creating a cyber-inspired through-type LED matrix lighting effect. This design not only preserves the signature design elements of the Smart brand but also elevates the vehicle's futuristic and technological appeal, making it highly recognizable.
The compact design of the headlamp also ensures ease of installation and operation while meeting stringent requirements for heat dissipation, optical performance, and electronic control within a limited space. This demonstrates FORVIA HELLA's expertise in complex lighting systems and automotive lighting electronics. In addition, the compact design offers additional space for vehicle design with enhanced flexibility and freedom.
