The sound of silence: For road users, electric vehicles are difficult to notice acoustically, as they produce almost no driving noise at low speeds.
To prevent the risk of accidents, the flush mounting of an acoustic warning system has been mandatory in the European Union since July 2019 for all newly developed pure electric drive vehicles (PEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and fuel cell vehicles (FCV). Up to speeds of 20 km/h (EU), vehicles must produce a sound similar to an internal combustion engine via a loudspeaker. In the US, the threshold is 19 mph (30 km/h). At speeds above this, the tire rolling noise is sufficient.
The acoustic warning system for vehicles (AVAS) from HELLA optimally fulfills these legal conditions. The system is automatically activated at startup and produces a clearly audible artificial engine noise, up to the specified speed and when reverse gear is engaged. When the target speed is exceeded, the signal is automatically faded out. The HELLA AVAS can moreover be manually switched on and off. Internal communication with the vehicle’s on-board electronics is done via CAN bus.
