HELLA TPMS sensors: precise monitoring, fast installation

Tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) continuously monitor the tyre pressure and thus make a significant contribution to driving safety. Depending on the vehicle type and workshop requirements, different solutions are needed to ensure efficient and safe utilisation. FORVIA HELLA offers both vehicle-specific and also universal tyre pressure monitoring sensors. Both variants ensure precise and automatic monitoring of the tyre pressure.

  • High reliability: HELLA TPMS sensors offer reliable pressure monitoring that minimises false alarms and provides customers with a high level of safety.

  • Easy installation: HELLA TPMS sensors are quick and easy to install.

  • Fast learning process: vehicle-specific HELLA TPMS sensors only require a brief teach-in process on the control unit, which speeds up work processes in the workshop and increases efficiency.

  • Increased compatibility: universal sensors for a variety of vehicle models simplify stock-keeping and cover a wide range of customer requirements.

Why HELLA?

  • Tyre pressure monitoring system installed in vehicles
  • Automatic and direct display of the pressure loss of one or more tyres when the problem occurs
  • Tyre pressure monitoring systems have been mandatory for all new vehicles in the EU since November 2014
  • Increasing driving safety
  • Further advantages according to sensor type:
    - Vehicle-specific TPMS: Enable easy installation through pre-programming
    - Universal TPMS: A large number of applications are covered by just one type of sensor. Now available in different versions and colours

How do HELLA TPMS sensors work?

FORVIA HELLA relies on particularly powerful, direct-measuring systems for its TPMS systems. The sensors from HELLA continuously measure the tyre pressure of all tyres and send the data wirelessly to the control unit in the vehicle. The values are measured directly and not calculated. The control unit in the vehicle compares the measured values with a preset reference value. In this way, tyre pressure monitoring systems can also detect a gradual loss and provide an early warning: if the pressure of one or more tyres drops, the driver is informed by a warning on the vehicle's display.

Decisive advantages of direct measuring systems

A direct tyre pressure monitoring system offers decisive advantages over indirect systems.

1. Precise pressure measurement

Direct TPMS systems measure the tyre pressure in each tyre individually and provide precise pressure values that are transmitted to the vehicle in real time. This enables more accurate monitoring compared with indirect systems based on calculated values.

2. Rapid warning

In the event of a sudden or gradual loss of pressure, the direct system immediately triggers a warning. The vehicle can inform the driver of the exact tyre at an early stage so that action can be taken quickly.

3. Detection of slow pressure losses

Direct systems also detect slow, continuous pressure losses that the indirect system may not recognise. This is particularly useful for detecting small leaks or creeping air loss.

4. Temperature measurement

TPMS sensors from FORVIA HELLA not only record the tyre pressure, but also the temperature of the tyres - important additional information in the event of overheating or increased strain, such as at high speeds.

5. Avoidance of false alarms

Unlike the indirect system, which is based on wheel speeds and which can trigger false alarms under different tyre conditions such as uneven wear or the combination of different tyres, the direct system is more accurate and more reliable.

When do TPMS sensors need to be replaced?

Tyre pressure monitoring sensors usually have to be replaced after five to ten years or after around 100,000 miles when the battery in the sensors is used up. A necessary battery change is signalled in good time by a display in the vehicle so that there is no sudden failure. When changing from summer to winter tyres, it should be ensured that additional wheel sensors are attached, or that existing sensors are modified.

The range of HELLA TPMS sensors

At FORVIA HELLA you can obtain both vehicle-specific TPMS sensors and also universal TPMS sensors.

  • Universal TPMS sensors: thanks to their high flexibility, they can be used in various vehicle models. After installation, universal TPMS sensors are programmed and taught to suit the specific vehicle, a process which can be easily done using a diagnostic device.

  • Vehicle-specific TPMS sensors: one advantage of the vehicle-specific TPMS from FORVIA HELLA is the ease of installation: only a teach-in process to the vehicle's control unit is required. Thanks to the vehicle-specific development, no recoding of the sensors (as with universal TPMS) is required, which minimises the time required in the workshop.
