Disposal of defective brake components | HELLA

General information

The company environmental protection is an important criteria in day-to-day workshop activities for every garage. Waste is produced in the scope of the inspection or repair work every day that must not or cannot be disposed of in domestic waste. The different types of waste have been standardized by the European Union in the European Waste List (EWL). All types of waste have been assigned with a cross-border waste identification code.

Waste identification codes (AVV)

Waste products from the disassembly and maintenance on the brake system are allocated and disposed of as follows.

1. Brake pads

  • Brake pads are assigned to the AVV 16 01 12 and depending on the authorities or disposal companies, can be recycled, disposed of with ferrous metals or disposed of on the disposal site.
  • Brake pads where the origin is unknown or that contain asbestos are assigned to the AVV 16 01 11 and must be treated and disposed of as hazardous waste.

2. Brake discs and brake drums

  • Brake discs and brake drums are allocated to ferrous metals and thus to AVV 16 01 17.
  • The disposal is carried out as scrap metal.

3. Brake caliper and wheel brake cylinder

  • Components emptied completely can be disposed of as ferrous metals.

4. Brake fluid

  • Used brake fluid is classified as hazardous waste and is allocated to AVV 16 01 13.
  • Methods of disposal here are recycling or disposal as waste that has to be monitored particularly.

Note

All waste produced in the garage cannot always be clearly allocated. Material safety data sheets of the product manufacturer, contacting the disposal company or the responsible authorities may be of assistance here.
