Important safety note
Technical information and practical tips have been compiled by HELLA in order to provide professional support to vehicle workshops in their work. The information provided on this website is intended for use by suitably qualified personnel only.
If the engine of the above-mentioned vehicle only starts after the starter motor has been operated for a longer period of time, a faulty crankshaft sensor may be responsible for this.
Crankshaft sensors are used to determine the speed and crankshaft position. The most common installation position is near the flywheel. The design differs according to whether it is an inductive or Hall sensor. Before testing, it is essential to ascertain what type of sensor it is. Voltage signals caused by magnetic field changes are transmitted to the control unit by the rotary movement of the ring gear. This calculates the crankshaft speed and position in order to obtain important basic data for injection and ignition timing.
Before replacing the sensor, other sources of error (power supply, oxidation, cable break) should be excluded or removed. After the repair job has been completed, the error memory is to be deleted. For the carrying out of troubleshooting and repairs, we recommend using a diagnostic device, e.g. Hella Gutmann mega max X.
