Why choose HELLA auxiliary lamps?

What you should look out for in auxiliary lamps

There's auxiliary lamps, and then there’s auxiliary lamps. The following criteria must be considered in order to make the right choice:

  1. Light output and brightness:
The light output is crucial for visibility and safety. Depending on the intended use, the lamps should be bright enough to improve visibility at night or in poor weather conditions. The so-called reference number (Ref.) is also important in this context. It describes the maximum light intensity of a lamp.
  2. Light distribution and pattern:
The pattern of the light beam influences how effectively the road or terrain is illuminated. Wide and even light distributions are important for road use, while spotlight or floodlight patterns may be preferable for off-road vehicles.
  3. Quality:
The lamps have to withstand the rigours of on-road or off-road use. Rugged designs with dust, water and impact protection are crucial, especially for construction site or off-road vehicles that are often used in extreme conditions.
  4. Energy efficiency:
Efficient auxiliary lamps can reduce the load on the vehicle battery while delivering optimum performance. LED technology is the perfect choice for energy-efficient lighting.
  5. Mounting options:
the mounting options vary depending on the vehicle type and personal preferences. Some auxiliary lamps can be mounted at various points on the vehicle, e.g. on the bumper, on the roof rack or on the front apron.
  6. ECE approval:
If the auxiliary lamps are to be used on public roads, it is important that the corresponding ECE approvals have been obtained in order to fulfil the legal requirements.
  7. Additional features:
additional features can improve the performance and functionality of auxiliary lamps and increase customer satisfaction.

Why is ECE approval important for auxiliary high beam lamps?

Why is ECE approval important for auxiliary high beam lamps?

The ECE regulations are international standards defined by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. They ensure that vehicle parts, including auxiliary lamps, fulfil certain safety and performance standards.

Auxiliary lamps that fulfil these standards are safe to use and less prone to defects or malfunctions: ECE approval ensures that the auxiliary lamps fulfil certain quality and performance standards. Products with this approval have often undergone rigorous testing to ensure their reliability and durability.

As the ECE regulations are international standards, products with ECE approval are generally accepted in many countries.

Pay attention to the reference number

The reference number (Ref.) states the maximum light intensity of a lamp. With their help, you can recognise how powerful a lamp is: The high beam reference number and the ECE type approval are specified for every high beam headlamp. Two high beam headlamps with Ref. 17.5 produced a combined effect of Ref. 35 on the vehicle.

A high beam with a low reference number has a wide throw, but not as wide as a high beam with a high reference number. A high beam with a high reference number is therefore ideal for long, straight routes. A low reference number provides more effective illumination on winding roads, in mountainous regions for example.

The maximum reference number of all high beam headlamps is 100.
