Starters & alternators from HELLA: Comprehensive range with a perfect fit

The starter motor, also known as the ‘starter’, and alternator are essential components of a vehicle. They are largely responsible for a vehicle’s reliability and efficiency. A defective starter or alternator can cause considerable problems. It is therefore crucial for workshops to recognise and replace these components at an early stage. HELLA’s deposit-free starters and alternators mean that automotive professionals are making the right choice.

What HELLA offers

What HELLA offers

HELLA stands for approved quality, easy handling and cost-effective solutions: Our starters and alternators fulfil the particularly high quality requirements of the HELLA Competence Centre, and they also have an impressive, comprehensive range: with over 1,800 part numbers, HELLA covers around 85% of the passenger car and commercial vehicle market. In addition, our range also excels with its particularly high coverage, especially for agricultural and construction site vehicles.

No stress: Starters and alternators with no deposit

HELLA’s starter motors and alternators also have another clear advantage: Because we do not use a deposit system for our parts, there is no need to return old parts, a process that takes effort and is sometimes complicated. This saves vehicle professionals time and enables them to focus on their core skills.

Now there are also applications for the OFF-HIGHWAY sector!

No matter what the target group, for example agriculture, construction machinery, forklift trucks or the marine sector, the HELLA range holds its own in the toughest operating conditions and proves itself with its maximum efficiency. As usual, it demonstrates the best quality, is easy to handle and comes at a favourable price.

And there is yet another advantage: Because new parts have no deposit system, there is no complicated return process.

Starters and alternators from HELLA impress with a powerful product range for work vehicles in the off-highway segment.

How do starters and alternators work?

The starter (motor) is an electric motor that starts a vehicle’s combustion engine. It receives energy from the battery and brings the combustion engine to a sufficient speed for the starting process via a gearwheel, also known as a pinion, to trigger it to start.

The Alternator’s job is to supply all electrical consumers within the vehicle with energy and to charge the starter battery at the same time. The alternator is usually driven by the engine via a drive belt. According to the induction principle, a charging current is generated that supplies the vehicle with electrical energy.

Good to know: Start-stop systems are often used to reduce emissions. For this purpose, the starters from HELLA have a heavy-duty design for a longer service life, and the alternators have a higher power.

Why do starters and alternators need to be replaced?

The starter wears naturally, as it consists of mechanical and electrical parts. The brushes, bearings and magnetic switch are particularly susceptible to wear. A worn starter can result in the vehicle no longer starting. Common causes of malfunctions are a burnt-out magnetic switch, worn brushes or a defective pinion. Ageing components also play a role, as they can lose performance over the years.

It may be necessary to replace the starter in the following scenarios:

  • Starter not working
  • Unusual noise development during or after the starting process

Before replacing the starter, the following components must always be checked by a specialist:

  • Power supply (starter battery)
  • Cable connections and connectors
  • Actuating device, such as the ignition starter switch
  • Mechanical condition of the ring gear

The alternator may also wear out. The bearings and carbon brushes are the main parts that show signs of wear and tear. A defective alternator can result in the battery no longer being sufficiently charged, which ultimately leads to battery failure. In addition, a defect in the diodes or in the regulation of the voltage can impair the function of the alternator, which in turn can jeopardise the entire electrical supply of the vehicle.

It may be necessary to replace the alternator in the following scenarios:

  • The charging indicator lamp lights up
  • There are starting difficulties due to insufficiently charged vehicle battery
  • The vehicle battery heats up due to overload
  • The illuminance of the lamps fluctuates depending on the engine speed
  • The bulbs burn out quickly
  • There are unusual running noises
