Loss of coolant

The above vehicles may experience a gradual coolant loss, the cause of which is often not immediately clear.

To determine the cause of the coolant loss in the TDI engines with the code letters 'BKD', proceed as follows:

  • Perform a visual check on all the relevant system components (traces of coolant, leaks)
  • Perform a pressure loss test on the cooling system
  • Check the coolant for contamination (oil)
  • Check for coolant in the engine oil

Should the above methods fail to determine the source of the coolant loss, the following potential causes must also be considered:

  • Internal leaks in the exhaust gas recirculation radiator (EGR)
  • Defective cylinder head gasket
  • Hairline cracks in the cylinder head
