VW Golf - Excessive engine temperature | HELLA

VW

Golf / Golf Estate

Starting from model year 1997

If there are complaints for these models about "engine overheating" or "excessive engine temperature", check the functionality of the coolant pump (water pump), as well as the engine's thermal management peripheral components (thermostat, temperature sensor, etc.).

The problem may be caused by a broken paddle wheel in the coolant pump.

To test the functionality of the coolant pump, remove the cap from the coolant expansion tank. Start the engine and then keep the engine speed at approx. 2000 rpm.

Additionally, remove the coolant return line from the coolant expansion tank (see figure below). If the coolant is not flowing, replace the coolant pump.
