VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda: insufficient headlamp range or poor illumination of the road after H7 bulb replacement

After the main headlamp bulbs have been changed on the vehicles mentioned above, there may be insufficient illumination of the road or oncoming traffic may be dazzled. This is especially true when using H7 bulbs. There are two reasons for this. Either the headlamp’s bulb socket allows different mounting positions or the bulb has not been correctly inserted (twisted) during mounting. This leads to uncontrolled scattering of the light (Fig. 1).

Therefore, checking that the bulb is installed correctly is strongly recommended after every bulb replacement. The light pattern can be checked using a headlamp tester. Figure 2 shows that the installation has been done correctly. Here, the light/dark boundary and also the asymmetric angle are clearly visible.

This information may certainly also apply to vehicles from other manufacturers.
