Renault Espace-IV - Grinding noises when brake not pressed | HELLA
Renault Espace-IV
Model year 2002-2014
All models
Disk brake, rear axle
Grinding noises when brake not pressed
Brake pad worn on one side
Heavy wear on brake disc
If this defect is found in the vehicle models mentioned above, this may be due to a brake caliper guide becoming stiff or stuck. Heavy oxidation inside the bore holes on the aluminum housing causes the damping sleeves to sit more tightly, which in turn causes the guide bolts to jam.

Remedy
Since this defect is not visible from the outside, it is essential to check that the caliper guides are not clogged while carrying out brake repairs:
- Remove the guide bolts and damping sleeves and check for damage.
- Check the bore holes for damage and refurbish if possible.
To do this, use a suitable reamer to clean out the bore hole evenly. During this repair process, the damping sleeves and, if necessary, the guide bolts need to be renewed.
If the oxidation is too heavy and it is not possible to repair the component safely, the brake caliper must be renewed.

Maintenance information
If the vehicle is equipped with an electric parking brake, this must be deactivated before commencing repair work. Please observe the corresponding repair notes provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
This defect may also occur in other vehicle models with the same type of brake caliper.
