Noises when manoeuvring/parking

When manoeuvring/parking or driving over bumps, the above-mentioned vehicles may make crackling and/or clicking noises. Searching for the cause of this can sometimes be very difficult.

In the course of troubleshooting, the following components should be carefully checked:

  • Steering column/steering shaft/steering bearings (too much play/loose/worn out)
  • Front axle
  • Stabilisers/tie rods/supporting ball joints/wishbones (ball heads, sockets; rubber bearings - loose, damaged, worn out)
  • Drive shafts (play/water ingress/sleeves/bearings)
  • Suspension strut (camber plates/coupling rods damaged, worn)
  • Steering (tie rods damaged/worn out, play in steering gear)
  • Wheel bearings/wheel bolts (loose/damaged)
