Sudden drop in power, engine in emergency mode

With the above-mentioned vehicles, a sudden drop in engine performance may occur after the operating temperature has been reached. Often no error is stored in the control unit.
A defective fuel temperature sensor can be the cause of the trouble.

If the sensor is defective, it supplies incorrect values to the control unit. The sensor values can be determined using a diagnostic device (e.g. Hella Gutmann mega macs X) via the "Measured value blocks" function. However, if the value shows 60 °C at an engine and outside temperature of, for example, 10 C°, the value can increase to over 100 °C after a long journey. As plastic parts or cables can be damaged at such a temperature, the control unit "switches" the engine to emergency running mode as a result of the incorrectly measured value.

In order to remedy this, the fuel temperature sensor (which is installed on the high-pressure pump) should be replaced and a test drive carried out. Any existing error code entries have to be deleted.

This information may also apply to other vehicle models or other engine types.
