Sustainable lamps: HELLA is taking a big step towards the future

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, FORVIA HELLA presented a lamp concept that makes no cuts or compromises in terms of performance and functionality despite 70% lower CO2 emissions throughout the entire product life cycle.

Pioneering sustainable lamps

Yves Andres, a member of FORVIA HELLA’s Management Board, highlights here the company's ambition to shape the mobility of the future by means of innovative and sustainable product solutions. "We want to develop products that benefit customers, consumers and the environment in equal measure. As a technology leader, we also want to play a pioneering role in the field of vehicle lighting and with our concept for sustainable lamps we plan to take a significant step towards the furthering of a circular economy."

Less, better, longer: this is what the sustainability concept is about

The core concept of the sustainable lamp is based on the three fundamental principles of "use less, use better, use longer". Significantly fewer components are used here, with decorative elements being combined with structurally required components. Furthermore, we rely primarily on single-type and therefore recyclable materials and individual, standardised components that can be reused beyond the service life of a lamp. One key element in particular is the SSL48 light module, which not only saves weight and material thanks to its flat Fresnel lens, but it also guarantees an energy-efficient phase of use brought about by its software-controlled light functions. In contrast to comparable lamps, damage-free dismantling is possible, which means that individual parts can be replaced and repaired in order to extend the service life of the lamp and to increase the recycling rate.

The concept of sustainable lamps strives to achieve cost neutrality

Despite its high level of sustainability, the overall concept of the sustainable lamp does not incur any additional financial costs when compared with conventional LED lamps on the market. The use of reused components, the reduction in component requirements and the lower overall weight should all offset the cost of higher-quality materials. Yves Andres emphasises the importance of this concept: "Sustainability, performance and functionality do not create a contradiction in terms!" In future, FORVIA HELLA would like to further develop the concept of sustainable lamps together with its customers and, in the medium term, integrate such lamps into possible series products.
