Wearing parts on the wheel brake | HELLA

Note on storage

General information

Internal and external corrosion (rust damage) are the factors which play the largest part in the durability of brake pads, brake shoes, brake discs and brake drums. These products should be stored in rooms where European climatic conditions (-10 °C to 30 °C) are not exceeded or undershot.

A visual inspection of the products is recommended every 3-5 years.

Storage of brake pads and

brake shoes

All friction materials should be inspected after the specified time period for any signs of serious corrosion. If corrosion is not found, they can be stored for another 3-5 years. A further visual inspection is then due.

Light corrosion on the surface of the pad is not critical and generally disappears after the first few braking procedures. If a brake pad or brake shoe is so heavily corroded that the specified dimensions can no longer be complied with, the product is no longer suitable for installation and must be disposed of accordingly.

Storage of brake discs and brake drums

Coated brake discs from HELLA are permanently protected against corrosion by a special treatment. A film of oil is applied to uncoated brake discs and drums and they are then packaged in foil, which affords the greatest possible corrosion protection up to the point of installation. However, a visual inspection should still be performed every 3-5 years. Minor corrosion on the running surface is not critical and is removed during the initial braking operations following installation.

However, if corrosion has formed on the faces of the component which are in contact with the wheel hub, the component may need to be disposed of depending on the degree of damage.

Storage conditions

HELLA recommends the following storage conditions for the mentioned products:

  • Store in enclosed, dry rooms
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Store in sealed original packaging
  • Store on level pallets/shelves
  • Protect from impacts/overloading
  • Protect from temperature extremes and air humidity
