If the above fault is complained of and, at the same time, the warning lights for ABS, EPC and ESP light up on the dashboard, you should consider a defective clutch sensor (clutch position sensor) as a possible cause.
In the ABS system, error code 00526 is synonymous with “Implausible signal from brake-light switch”.
In this situation you should first check that the brake-light switch is functioning correctly. If you find nothing wrong with it, check fuse no.7 in the “Battery” fuse box in the engine compartment and replace it if it is defective. If the fuse then fails again this may indicate that you also have the above fault in the “clutch sensor”. In view of its exposed position, an inadequate rubber cap on the master clutch cylinder may allow water to get in, causing the Hall sensor to fail or blow the fuse. For this situation, the manufacturer offers a new Hall sensor with a better seal.
Note:
The safety function that responds to a defective fuse by lighting up the brake light is a special feature of VW.
