Important safety note
Technical information and practical tips have been compiled by HELLA in order to provide professional support to vehicle workshops in their work. The information provided on this website is intended for use by suitably qualified personnel only.
The Active Distance Assist may fail sporadically in the above-mentioned vehicle type. This fault pattern mainly occurs in wet conditions. The entries C163AFA and C163AFB, radar sensor dirty or defective, can be stored in the error memory.
In such a case, special attention should be paid to the cover (radome) of the front radar sensor. The cover (emblem/logo) is installed in the front grille and consists of several plastic layers that are welded together. Water can penetrate through cracks or defects caused by stone chips, for example, and the radar beams of the sensor are damped as a result. This results in an error message and system failure.
In order to reproduce the required behaviour, you can, for example, proceed as follows: Remove the cover (emblem/logo) and place in soapy water for approx. 6 hours. Then refit the component and carry out a test drive.
If the problem still occurs during the subsequent test drive, the cover (emblem/logo) should be replaced. Then delete the error memory and finally carry out a test drive.
