There's auxiliary lamps, and then there’s auxiliary lamps. Bear in mind the following when making your selection:

1. Light output and brightness:
Crucial for visibility and safety. Depending on the intended use, the lamps should be sufficiently bright. The reference number (Ref.) states the maximum light intensity of a lamp.

2. Light distribution and pattern:
The pattern of the light beam influences the effectiveness of the illumination. Wide uniform light distributions for road use, spot or floodlight patterns for off-road vehicles.

3. Quality:
rugged designs with protection against dust, water and shocks, especially for extreme conditions. This makes them particularly suitable for off-road and construction site vehicles.

4. Energy efficiency:
Efficient lamps reduce the load on the vehicle battery. LED technology is ideal for energy-efficient lighting.

5. Mounting options:
the mounting options vary depending on the vehicle type and personal preferences. Some auxiliary lamps can be mounted at various points on the vehicle, e.g. on the bumper, roof rack or front apron.

6. ECE approval:
The corresponding ECE approval is important for public road traffic.

7. Additional features:
additional features can improve the performance and functionality of auxiliary lamps and increase customer satisfaction.

This is why ECE approval is so important for auxiliary high beam lamps

The ECE regulations are international standards defined by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. They ensure that vehicle parts, including auxiliary lamps, fulfil certain safety and performance standards. and also guarantee that the corresponding products are accepted in many countries.

Auxiliary lamps that fulfil these standards are safe to use and less prone to defects or malfunctions: ECE approval ensures that the auxiliary lamps fulfil certain quality and performance standards. Products with this approval have often undergone rigorous testing to ensure their reliability and durability.

What are the most important ECE regulations when selecting auxiliary high beam lamps?

The ECE-R149 or ECE-R112 regulations apply to high beams. If the auxiliary lamps also include a position light, the ECE-R148 or ECE-R7 regulations are relevant. These regulations ensure that the lamps meet the high safety and quality standards and can be used legally on public roads.

  • ECE-R149: This regulation applies to high beam headlamps and other lamps designed for long-range visibility. It specifies the requirements for light distribution, brightness and design to ensure that the lamps provide sufficient luminosity and range without dazzling other road users.

  • ECE-R112: Similar to ECE-R149, this regulation sets out the requirements for high beam headlamps. It includes light intensity, beam distribution and durability tests of the lamps to ensure consistently high performance and safety on the road.

  • ECE-R148: This regulation applies to position lights and other lights for marking the vehicle contours. It defines the requirements for light colour, intensity and distribution to ensure that vehicles can be clearly seen when visibility is poor or in the dark.

  • ECE-R7: This regulation specifies the technical requirements for position lights, parking lights and tail lamps. It specifies the minimum and maximum values for light intensity and beam angle of to ensure that the lights clearly illuminate the contours of the vehicle and add to road safety.

Pay attention to the reference number

The reference number (Ref.) states the maximum light intensity of a lamp. The high beam reference number and the ECE type approval are specified for every high beam headlamp. Two high beam headlamps with Ref. 17.5 produced a combined result of Ref. 35.

A high beam with a low reference number has a wide throw, but not as wide as a high beam with a high reference number. A high beam with a high reference number is therefore ideal for long, straight routes. A low reference number provides more effective illumination on winding roads, in mountainous regions for example.

The maximum reference number of all high beam headlamps is 100.
