The most reliable way to identify the correct windshield wipers is by using vehicle data such as make, model, year of manufacture and, where applicable, vehicle type. The driver and passenger sides may require different lengths. The adapter must also match the wiper arm. A vehicle-specific product finder is therefore more reliable than simply measuring the existing wiper.

Windshield wipers should be checked regularly and replaced when wiping performance declines. As a rule of thumb, replacement every six to twelve months is advisable. Heavy exposure to UV radiation, frost, dirt or frequent use may make an earlier replacement necessary. Warning signs include streaking, unwiped areas, squeaking, juddering and cracked or deformed wiping edges.

Squeaking and juddering are often caused by a dirty or dry windshield, oil or wax residues, hardened wiper rubber or an incorrect wiper-arm angle. First clean the windshield and the wiping edge. If the noise continues, the wiper blade, adapter, wiper arm preassure and linkage should be checked and adjusted or replaced if necessary.

UV radiation, high temperatures, dry dirt and insect residue put additional strain on the wiping edge. The material may harden, become brittle or lose its even wiping edge. Regularly cleaning the windshield and the wiping edge reduces this stress. In especially sunny and hot regions, UV- and temperature-resistant silicone wipers can be a suitable alternative.

Conventional wipers use a classic metal frame with joints and multiple pressure points. Flat blade wipers have no visible joint system; an integrated spring rail distributes the contact pressure across the blade. Their low-profile, aerodynamic design can be particularly beneficial at higher speeds. The permitted type depends on the vehicle and the wiper-arm connection.

A vehicle-specific HELLA wiper set contains two suitable flat blade wipers for the driver and passenger sides. The HELLA PREMIUM 3.0 Wiper is a conventional wiper with a robust metal frame. Joints and pressure points distribute the contact force across the wiping edge. A coated natural-rubber element supports smooth, even wiping. This wiper type is suitable for vehicles approved for conventional metal wipers.

A nano coating is designed to reduce friction on the glass and support smooth, streak-free wiping. The lower friction can also help reduce wear on the wiping edge. HELLA uses this technology on Rear Flat and Rear Plastic wipers for rain, snow and spray.

The HELLA short code usually combines the product line and the wiper length. For example, CT stands for CleanTech and the number often indicates the length in centimetres; CT70 denotes a 700-millimetre wiper. In some markets or product lines, the length may also be stated in inches. The packaging, part number and vehicle allocation should therefore also be checked.

Adapter codes identify different connections between the wiper blade and the wiper arm. Depending on the product line, the codes may refer to hook, pin, bayonet, pinch-tab, top-lock or other connections. An adapter code is not automatically suitable for every vehicle. The vehicle-specific allocation in the product finder or catalogue is always decisive.

Conventional wipers can be replaced with flat blade wipers if the new wiper is approved for the vehicle and the existing wiper arm. According to the brochure, product lines such as HELLA SmartTech are also intended as an upgrade for vehicles with standard metal wipers. The length, adapter, wiper arm and vehicle application must still match exactly.

With a symmetrical design, the aerodynamic spoiler is configured so that the wiper can generally be used for both left- and right-hand-drive applications. This simplifies product allocation and increases vehicle coverage. Actual compatibility still depends on the approval, length and adapter combination.

According to the HELLA product brochure, the even contact and wiping performance of the CLEANTECH 3.0 were tested over 1,000,000 wiping cycles. Such endurance tests are intended to show how consistently the contact pressure, material and wiping function perform under repeated stress.

Conventional wipers usually use natural or synthetic rubber and, with a suitable coating, provide reliable wiping performance. Silicone wipers are particularly resistant to UV radiation and high or low temperatures and may run more smoothly on water-repellent windshields. The best choice depends on vehicle approval, climate, windshield condition and operating conditions.

Gently wipe the rubber element with a clean, damp cloth and clean the windshield at the same time. This removes dust, dirt and light oil or wax residues. If streaking, cracks, deformation or noise remains afterwards, the wiping edge is probably worn and the wiper blade should be replaced.
